In Your Pack and On Your Back:
A Guide of What to Bring
Here are some suggestions of what to bring on your Quadra island hiking trip
Browse this checklist and come prepared.
In Your Pack
Water Bottle
Water is perhaps the most important item you will be bringing on your hiking day adventure. We suggest bringing at least one litre of water per person although one and a half litres per person is better. The trails are a fair distance from reliable water sources and with the heat of the day combined with physical exercise, it is better to have too much than too little.
Rain Gear
 i.e. waterproof/windproof jacket and pants
Yes. Although we don’t like to think of the possibility of rain in summer. Our trips operate rain or shine and you will be much more comfortable if you prepare yourself for the possibility of some liquid sunshine.
Bathing Suit
Since Quadra Island’s freshwater lakes heat up nicely in the peak of the summer, some of our hikes will be perfect for a quick dip. Pack a bathing suit if you plan on cooling off from the hot summer sun.
Sunscreen/Bug Repellant
Sunscreen is always a good idea when outdoors. Although insects are generally not a concern for us on the coast there may be times when you want some insect repellant just in case. An alternative for either of these cosmetic deterrents is to wear light, long sleeved clothing.
Snacks (optional)
High energy power bars or snack bars are great.
Camera
Of course bring your camera to capture those Kodak moments along the trail.
Backpack
Now all you need is somewhere to put all your things! We advise bringing a backpack that has straps for both shoulders to even out the load. Make sure it is functional (all the zippers zip, all the straps strap, everything fits inside) and make sure it is comfortable.
On Your Back
Clothing
Pay attention to the weather forecast or outside your window to know what to wear on the day of your tour. During the summer, loose fitting shorts and t-shirts are most likely acceptable for hiking. Try to avoid cotton on very hot days since the material tends to soak up the sweat, leaving it clinging to your body, only to cool you down when you stop for a rest. Instead, wear synthetic materials like polyester.
Always bring a sweater or long sleeve shirt in case you cool down during the breaks or the weather changes. Additionally, in Spring or Fall, consider wearing pants (anything other than jeans) since it is sometimes cool in the mornings.
Overall, you can’t go wrong if you layer! If you get hot, take off a layer and carry it in your pack. Too cool? Extra warmth will be close by.

Sunglasses
Protect yourself from the summer sun’s rays. Although you will be hiking in the forest, there are times where you might be hiking next to a body of water or in a clearing. We are all aware of the powerful effects of the sun so bring your sunglasses with you.
Footwear
Trails often have roots and rocks that stick out and become very slippery when wet. Comfortable day hiking shoes or running shoes (sneakers) are perfect for the type of terrain you will be covering.

Hat
Wide-brimmed hats are recommended in order to cover up the skin on the most important part of your body. It’ll also shield your eyes and keep your head cool.

Other Items

Hiking poles (optional)

Hiking poles are an excellent optional item. They provide stability and balance for those trickier spots on the trail. They also add a great upper body workout and are unparalleled as a leaning post.
